Page 3 of 4 She now teaches orienteering, team building and leadership through her company Ultimate Outdoor Adventures, and has designed many racecourses, including the orienteering section of the Sea to Summit Challenge for seven years. The experience has paid off in superior logistics for the two events. For example, all legs of the challenge will be staged from a single transition area, reducing the need to transport equipment and also providing a central location for spectators. Safety and security issues have been fully considered, with St. John Ambulance on hand to provide first aid support and Maple Ridge Search and Rescue workers donating their time to monitor points along the route. Consideration was also given to ensuring the challenges are fair. The organizers won't be posting signs and ribbons along the routes - something that has led to cheating in other events because it allows competitors to cut corners. "For this one, people will have to use the maps," Slavenova said. The events kick into gear with the opening of the competition centre at noon May 14, followed by training and registration. The mountain biking challenge runs May 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and fees range from $35 to $55. The adventure races start May 15 at 5 p.m. (24 hours) and May 16 at 9 a.m. (open, eight and four hours) and fees range from $35 to $220. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each category, including passes to future Ultimate Outdoor Adventure events and activities and prizes donated by sponsors. Spectators can watch for free, and 94.5 FM the BEAT will be broadcasting live from the event. The fun wraps up with an award ceremony for the adventure race in the bandstand on 224 Street in downtown Maple Ridge on May 16 at 6 p.m., followed by a barbecue and closing party.
